EXPERIENCE

Nicole earned her BSc in Human Life Science from Stellenbosch University. She plays a crucial role in processing research specimens according to SOP and GCLP guidelines.

In addition to her responsibilities, she takes on the role of training new staff and students, as well as managing stock orders for the diverse research projects at RIRCA. Nicole’s passion lies in reproductive immunology and all things related to the placenta.

Currently pursuing an Honours degree on a part-time basis, her project focuses on examining the structure of trophoblast cells using Fluorescence Microscopy. Beyond her academic pursuits, Nicole finds joy in reading, hiking, and exploring the scenic landscapes of wine farms in her free time.

INTERVIEWS

INTRODUCTION

Please welcome Nicole Prins our Scientific Officer:
I grew up in the small town of Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo and moved to Cape Town to pursue my BSc in Human Life Sciences at Stellenbosch University, where I also completed an Honours degree at the Division of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics. I have 10 years of experience working on diverse research projects, developing strong skills in both molecular biology and immunology. Currently, I work as a Scientific Officer at The Reproductive Immunology Research Consortium in Africa, where I process research specimens, optimize assays, and train staff and students. I especially enjoy conducting experiments and data analysis. I’m passionate about immunology and currently completing my MSc in the field.

FUTURE PLANS

Nicole Prins, our talented Scientific Officer and MSc student. Nicole shares her journey into immunology, her research interests, some advice for future immunologists and her career aspirations.

📖 I’ve always known I wanted to be a scientist—shows like NCIS and CSI sparked my early curiosity about science and problem-solving. I discovered immunology by chance while working in a research group at Stellenbosch University and have remained in the field ever since.

🥼 My research interests lie in understanding how early-life exposure to pathogens shapes immune development, with the goal of informing vaccine strategies and public health interventions.

💡 For those considering a career in immunology: remain intellectually curious and seek strong mentorship. The right mentor often matters more than the project itself.

🚀 In ten years, I see myself as a principal investigator, mentoring future scientists and leading impactful translational research in Africa.
