Hi, how can we help?

SAPARI Study

South African Placental and Reproductive Investigation

The South African Placental and Reproductive Investigation (SAPARI) is a research project focused on investigating the mechanisms underlying pre-eclampsia, foetal growth restriction (FGR), and the relationships between these conditions and early-onset pre-eclampsia (eoPE). It also involves comparing these conditions with preterm (PT) controls to better understand placental and reproductive health in a South African context. Along with our collaborators in Berlin and Melbourne, we will investigate how various candidate gene expression and functions vary to reveal unique insights into the molecular pathways driving each form of pre-eclampsia in the context of HIV and ART exposure. We aim to identify biomarkers and mechanisms that may improve early detection and management of these conditions, with a focus on maternal and foetal outcomes.

The study uses placental tissue analysis, and molecular techniques such as qPCR and proteomics to assess gene expression and protein profiles associated with these pregnancy complications. Additionally, clinical data and patient samples are analysed to identify risk factors and potential therapeutic targets for improved maternal and foetal health.
