RIRCA is a training hub for immunologists in infectious diseases and especially HIV, but also other disease burden facing child-bearing people. Through our NIH/Fogerty D43 programme: “Next Generation Training in HIV Research: Immunity in the First 1000 Days in Mother-Infant Dyads”, known as TIGRIS, we aim to train PhD, Post-doctoral Fellows and MMed/MPhil students from across Africa. We have partners in Malawi, Kenya, Uganda and Benin and will offer 3-6 month training for registered students with our research partners in the US, UK and Canada.

BRAINS aims to enhance human capital development in Africa, while strengthening intra-African collaboration as called for by Agenda 2063. The program aims to increase the employability of students, improve the quality of higher education in Africa and its relevance to our development agenda, and to strengthen, modernize and internationalize African higher education institutions.

The popular IDA symposium has been held in South Africa since 2007. The course is a collaboration between Professor Clive Gray and Professor Guido Ferrari (Duke University, USA) and Erica Nissen-Andersen (HVTN CHIL lab) and aims to “Inspire Africa through Immunology.”
Each IDA symposium aims to educate African immunologists in the immunology of HIV, TB, Malaria and COVID. Local and international experts also share their latest discoveries. Soft skills such as poster presentations and grant writing are also part of these highly popular symposia.

Professor Clive Gray has been involved in educating scientists for many years. He founded Immunopaedia from the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation International Leadership Award in 2004.
Immunopaedia offers free online immunology courses from the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS), the Infectious Diseases in Immunology (IDA) Symposium and Universities across the world.
Immunopaedia Foundation is a non-profit company and public benefit organisation in South Africa. It offers free CPD points for healthcare workers accredited with the HPCSA.

The International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS) is an umbrella organization for many of the regional and national societies of immunology throughout the world. The IUIS contributes to the staging of regular congresses, conferences and various educational activities in immunology.
The IUIS Education Committee holds interactive regional workshops supported by preparatory online pre-course modules on Immunopaedia to optimize contact teaching time.

A week-long virtual course targeted at PhD students and early postdocs who have a strong interest in the interaction between the immune system and pathogens, and how this underlies the pathogenesis of a wide range of infectious and non-communicable diseases.
The online course consists of intensive interactive learning sessions and symposia on the most recent advances in immunology, immune disease and the consequences of chronic immune activity on human health. The parasitology of malaria, HIV, TB, helminths, HPV and other viruses including Covid 19 will also be covered. Delivered by some of the leading researchers in the field, participants will also benefit from grant writing, science communication and career-mentoring sessions.
